An international conference on “Law and Climate” was organised by the Union of Judges of Azerbaijan (“the Union”) on 6 September 2024 in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan. Upon the invitation of the Union, Mr. Basri Bağcı, Vice-President of the Constitutional Court, participated in the conference on behalf of the Turkish Constitutional Court.

The opening remarks of the conference were delivered by Mr. Basri Bağcı, Mr. Ramiz Rzayev, President of the Union, Mr. Mukhtar Babayev, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Azerbaijan and President of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29), Mr. Inam Kerimov, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and Chairman of the Judicial-Legal Council of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ms. Sabina Aliyeva, the Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of the Republic of Azerbaijan, and Mr. Anar Bagirov, Chairman of the Bar Association of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

In his remarks, Mr. Basri Bağcı, emphasising that the issues such as climate change and environmental protection should be taken seriously in order to protect our world and leave a healthy environment for future generations, pointed out the great responsibility of the judiciary in this sense. Indicating that the 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) to be held in Baku on 11-22 November 2024 was an extremely important meeting for our planet, Mr. Bağcı wished success to brotherly Azerbaijan and all relevant institutions and expressed that the Turkish Constitutional Court was ready to provide any support.

Vice-President Bağcı also paid a visit to the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Azerbaijan upon the invitation of Mr. Farhad Abdullayev, Chairman of the Constitutional Court.
